19th Cent Tuners

An absolutely beautiful, mid-19th century complete set of tuners for a slotted-peghead guitar, almost surely from a Martin and almost surely having been made by Seidel of Germany. German silver backplates with knockout, beautifully conservative impressions between the gears of vines, leaves, and flowers (Tulips? Poppies? You tell me), and repeating pattern along all edges of the plates. Not only that, the buttons are of genuine end-grain ivory, quite rare on these, as common bone was by far the norm; these may have come from a higher-grade Martin. In most excellent condition, with all gears tight and with virtually no wear on the gears or the worms, and all worm shafts quite tight in their bosses, virtually no wiggle. Even the gear screws show almost no sign of meddling; the slots in the screw heads are 95-100% clean. All gear spacings are 1-1/4” / 2-1/2", perfect Martin measurements. My guess is manufacture between the 1860s and 1880s for these. $1495
