2000 Martin Custom Acoustic Guitar Magazine 10th Anniversary
Wow! This is as custom as it gets from Martin. Only two of these were ever made, as a special project to celebrate Acoustic Guitar Magazine’s 10th anniversary. One was kept by Acoustic Guitar, the other was put up as a prize for, well, something. I believe it ended up in an auction of some sort via the winner of the prize, and an old acquaintance of mine bought it. It is now here, for sale, and it is spectacular in every sense. Its high-gloss black lacquer finish is over superbly straight-grained spruce and East Indian rosewood, with the top of course having traditional scalloped braces and a small maple bridge plate. In contrast to the black lacquer finish the fingerboard, bridge, pickguard and peghead overlay are all of eye-catching, knockout, cream-colored Micarta, with contrasting black Micarta nut and saddle. And that peghead decor! A large, heart-of-abalone “10” with the words “Acoustic Guitar” set across it in gold leaf, with the matching traditional “CF Martin & Co,” script logo above that, also in gold leaf. I’ve never seen anything quite like it. The top has HD-28 style herringbone marquetry around its edge combined with a complementary matching back stripe. The soundhole has Martin’s proprietary 45-style abalone rosette with a full set of matching 45-stye “snowflake” abalone fingerboard inlays. Overall condition is near-mint, as it should be, and the action is set for much easier playing than any Dreadnaught has a right to have. I am told by the person at Martin who designed this masterpiece that Bob Dylan saw a picture of it in Acoustic Guitar Magazine and wanted something like it to go with his black and white suit, and so they made him a black and white guitar with a double pickguard, but not quite like this. The Acoustic Guitar project also led to Martin's 2002 Limited Edition “Negative” Dreadnaughts and their 2007 Limited Edition “Negative” OM guitars. You are not going to see another one of these show up again anywhere; there just ain’t no more nor are there going to be. $4995 w/ohsc
