000 guitars are what Martin calls their “Auditorium Size", and rightfully so. It is the largest of their non-Dreadnaught guitars, whose design originates in 1902 with the modern 14-fret versions having come out in 1934. Quite the comfy size and body shape without being needlessly large, the 000-18, with its mahogany back and sides, has got a pure sound ideal for anything in front of a microphone if you're so inclined, performing or recording, or just sitting around the house and enjoying yourself immensely. It is a truly great guitar to have and to hold. This particular 1961 Martin 000-18, now more than sixty years old (can you believe that?), is a remarkable instrument. With only one ancient very well repaired (and nearly invisible) crack, up near the pickguard, it is in lovely condition. The action is of medium height, not your super-woozy feather-light but still comfortable, gives you a nice solid handful to lay into. There is noticeable wear on the first five frets or so, high-E and B strings, though remarkably it plays beautifully. Both nut and saddle are the original genuine ivory. The guitar came to me from a famous jazz musician who insists on remaining anonymous, but this is to show you that it has been owned and cared for and played by a pro for many, many years.
